Drive from East Perth to Creswick: Day 5 Bordertown SA to Creswick, Victoria

When I woke up in Bordertown I could hear the trucks moving across the border again and the power was back on! More bad weather was forecast so I packed up and hit the road. The A8 was wet and potholed, and I had to take care. The rain-soaked countryside was beautiful. I passed the Grampians, and other picturesque ranges, and wished that I had time to look more closely, but was also keen, now on my last day, to reach my destination safely!

The sun came out when I got closer to Creswick. It was a relief to know I was nearly there, but a little sad to realise the journey was over. I loved every minute of it! Even the terror of the South Australian storm!

Drive from East Perth to Creswick: Day 4 Port Augusta to Bordertown SA during the worst storm for 50 years

When I set out to leave Port Augusta the wind was up but I did not realise that the power generation from there was about to collapse along with the pylons blown over by strong gales. I had a five centimetre crack in the windscreen of the Kluger, and was very worried the whole thing would blow, but had to get going anyway. I planned to avoid Adelaide (just as well) and leave the main highway near Port Pirie and drive through the Clare Valley. This turned ot to be the right choice, although it was quite tense driving. At about 9:00 am it was a dark as evening, and forked lightning, hail and rain were my companions along the road. I went up and down high hills, thankfully never having to drive through more than a few inches of water. Some roads were very narrow, with steep drops on either side, It reminded me of driving through the Pennines. Despite the storm I had to stop in Clare to buy some wine.

Once I reached Bordertown at about 5:00 pm I decided that was far enough, although I could have taken my chances and crossed into Victoria. I found the motel, and was told they had a room, but no power. I had a cold shower and ate cold tinned food. Some poor bedraggled wet parrots were trying to dry themselves on the tree outside the bathroom window. I read for a while with a torch and slept well.

Drive from East Perth to Creswick: Day 3 Border Village to Port Augusta

This was the longest stretch. I visited the fabulous cliffs on the edge of the continent over the Great Australian Bight, crossed the Nullarbor, and drove through Ceduna and on to the spectacular Iron Knob and to Port Augusta.

Halfway across the Nullarbor I was told by the attendant at the Nullarbor Roadhouse (where I saw and dingo trot across the road), that a major storm was forecast to hit Adelaide and the rest of South Australia. This was a bit worrying, as I was heading to meet it! I ploughed on.

The ore rock Iron Monarch at Iron Knob is like a mineral planet. As I got close I could see people working in this huge beautiful red rock. The sunset light was breathtaking. After passing here I was driving in the dark for the last hour or so, which was a little unnerving. Leon Bridges sang me in. My motel room was in the darkest corner of the lot, and quite strange. The bathroom had no door but was screened with a curtain. I ordered room service dinner, which was a nice treat after the long haul.

In late September I set off to drive some of our fragile and precious things across the country to our new place in Creswick, Victoria. It was a trip!
